The 12th annual Douglas County nighttime Veterans Day parade through downtown Douglasville will begin at 7 p.m. today.

“This is the county’s salute to veterans, active military and reserves,” said Wes Tallon, county communications and community relations director. “All units in the parade are required to honor our military and veterans and U.S. flag.”

The one-mile parade route will begin at the parking lots of Douglas County High School, go north on Campbellton Street, west on Church Street, south on Bowden Street. Then it will go east on Upshaw Street and south on Price, Woodrow and Campbellton streets, back to the high school.

Tallon said the parade will be led by four county garden clubs, carrying a banner decorated with flowers to honor veterans.

“The garden club members will also carry 47 roses to honor the 47 Douglas County citizens who have died in World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam and war on terrorism,” Tallon said. “Bagpiper Rick Parker will follow the garden clubs, followed by the Douglas County 4-H Clubs, carrying a 20-by-30-foot U.S. flag.”

Military units from the Douglasville National Guard Armory will come next, followed by the JROTC units from Alexander, Douglas County and Chapel Hill high schools and Kings Academy.

Veteran groups in motorized units will include the American Legion, AmVets and the Vietnam Veterans of American.

Injured Iraqi Veteran Brian Hall will march with his therapeutic dog, Radar. Douglas County residents contributed funds to purchase the dog to help Hall in his daily life.

The Jones-Wynn Funeral Home staff will go ahead of the parade to hand out American flags to be waved by the people lining the parade route.

Citizen marchers saluting veterans include Lanier Legacy Foundation, Winston Girls Softball, First Baptist Church Singles, Douglasville Mayor Mickey Thompson, Douglas County Commission Chairman Tom Worthan, Douglas County Parks and Recreation Park Security staff, Girl Scout Troop 798, Boy Scout Troops 555 and 62, the Seventh Day Adventist Church Pathfinders, Scott Powers, Dyer Racine, dctv23 (Douglas County government access TV channel) and Douglas County Board of Commissioners.

Tallon said any veteran or active military person may participate in the parade. Line up begins at 6 p.m. in the Douglasville High School parking lots.

“There’s no cost to participate in the parade, but all marchers are required to salute the military, veterans and the U.S. flag,” he said.

There are so may who continue to rant that we are again fighting now Vietnam all over again. These people do not realize that the Vietcong did not ever attack the NYC tallest buildings with so many international innocent civilians inside and so many of our NYC bravest fireman trying to rescue them. We are now trying to protect our homeland. Our vets have fought so many different wars. Regardless of the outcome they will always, always be our most sacred heroes. From our first war to our last war that ends all wars the vets are in the middle of it. Honor them with all of your heart and soul because that is how they are trained to honor you.
