As of early Tuesday afternoon, no one had qualified to run for three open Hiram City Council seats in November, while all three Dallas Council incumbents have announced plans to seek re-election when qualifying begins today.
Candidates for the Post 3, Post 4 and Post 5 Hiram Council seats can qualify at City Hall through Friday. The qualifying fee is $90.
Post 3 Councilman Charles Schafer and Post 4 Councilman Alvin Sims indicated earlier they would not seek re-election, and Post 5 Councilman Vince Smith said he probably wouldn’t. Schafer said he had served enough council terms and wanted to make way for new council members and their ideas, and Sims said he was not running for medical reasons.
Dallas Ward 1 Councilman Kelly Carter, Ward 3 Councilman Griffin White and at-large Councilwoman Nancy Arnold say they will register to run again during the qualification period from 8:30 a.m. today until 4:30 p.m. Friday at City Hall. The qualification fee in Dallas is $150.
In Hiram, council candidates can live anywhere in the city and are elected citywide. In Dallas, council candidates are elected citywide, but members representing wards must live in those wards. At-large candidates can live anywhere in the city.
Hiram qualification began Monday.
The cities will cover the county Elections Office’s costs in supervising their elections Nov. 3.
