Keep Douglasville Beautiful (KDB) is raising litter awareness this week by displaying a week’s worth of roadside trash at the corner of Chapel Hill Road and Interstate 20.

The pile of 2.5 tons of trash gathered last week inside the city limits is on display to raise awareness of the cost of littering as part of the statewide “Litter, It Costs Money” campaign.

According to a banner in front of the pile, it costs the city $200,000 per year to pick up roadside trash.

Chan Weeks, KDB executive director, said the 2.5 tons picked up last week is standard, as the weight of weekly roadside trash averages between two and three tons.

The pile is in front of Texas Road House off Chapel Hill Road, and it will be on display until next Monday.

Trash collected last week on the side of roads in the county include tire scraps, cigarette butts, fast food wrappers and plastic and glass bottles.

“When you consider this trash piles up one piece of paper or one cup at a time, this is a lot to pick up,” Maintenance and Sanitation Director Greg Roberts said.

KDB was joined Wednesday morning by Roberts, Mayor Mickey Thompson, Councilman Callye B. Holmes and state anti-litter mascot “Buster the Brown Trasher” as they filmed a short clip for CITI TV.
