All charges were dropped against one of the five suspects charged in the triple shooting on Molette Street Christmas Eve that left two people dead and another wounded.

Carrollton police said all charges have been dismissed against Cherelle Williams, 21, of Carrollton, who was charged with murder after police searched her Austin Street home following the shooting that left David Nixon, 53, and family friend Michael Cruver, 26, of Carrollton, dead. Nixon’s son, Reginald, was wounded after being shot in the shoulder. Williams was released from jail following the dismissal of the charges.

Police Capt. Jami Sailors said another woman, Monique Springer, 30, of Carrollton, was taken into custody Tuesday and arrested for false imprisonment in connection with statements she gave investigators implicating Williams in the shootings.

Springer was released from jail on bond Wednesday, according to authorities.

Police believe the shooting was the result of a robbery attempt while the family and a friend were inside the home.

David Nixon and family friend Cruver were found shot to death inside Nixon’s home at 111 Molette St. shortly before 2 a.m. on Christmas Eve. Police said Nixon’s son, Reginald, 27, was also shot during the attempted robbery at the house and continues to recover after being released from Tanner Medical Center-Carrollton.

Within 24 hours, Robert Andrew Robinson, 23, Lance Thomas Jr., 20, Tony R. Smith, 22, and Jarrell A. Washington, all from Ohio, were captured in Beaufort, S.C., and taken into custody on warrants for murder after Carrollton detectives called up Beaufort sheriff’s deputies to coordinate a lookout believing the suspects may have fled the state. Carrollton police were in South Carolina when the arrests were made.

All four Ohio men remain in the Carroll County jail without bond following a first-appearance hearing this week.

Robinson and Thomas were also charged with additional counts of aggravated assault in the shooting of Reginald Nixon. All four in custody could be presented to a grand jury this month, where additional indictments could follow.

Sailors said a manhunt is still under way for a sixth Carrollton man, James Lee Prothro III, with an alias of “Lil James,” 24, who is wanted for murder.

Carrollton police Capt. Chris Dobbs said it was unlikely the men from Ohio had known Cruver and the Nixon family prior to the alleged armed robbery, and the four men from Ohio were in town visiting with Smith’s cousin, Williams, in Carrollton for the holidays. Police said Prothro probably had known at least one of the victims prior to the shooting.

Dobbs said officers had not had any major disturbances or reports of crime on Molette Street recently prior to the double-murder investigation, and the area was generally considered a safe street, anchored by a school and a church.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Prothro may call Crime Stoppers at 770-838-STOP.
