Tallapoosa Police say no injuries were sustained in an accident last Friday that caused a food delivery truck to lose control and overturn on Highway 78 and Robertson Avenue in Tallapoosa.

According to a witness statement provided by police, at approximately 10 a.m., a woman was traveling south on Robertson and ran a red light on the street. She pulled in front of the truck driver and, in an attempt to avoid a crash, the truck driver lost control of the truck, and it then landed on its passenger side.

The crash resulted in a gas spill onto the roadway due to damage to the truck. The truck lost approximately 25 gallons of diesel fuel, according to Tallapoosa Police Officer Jerry McIntyre. There was additional damage to the truck, including a busted mirror and window on the passenger side.

“I called for the Peachtree Environmental Response Team to clean the diesel spill. I also called for the state Agriculture Department to inspect the contents in the truck for contamination,” McIntyre said.

The truck contained vegetables and poultry products, which McIntyre said may have been contaminated from the refrigerator not running during the two hours the truck was turned on its side. He said the truck was towed to an impound lot once wreckers sat it back on its wheels.

McIntyre said the women who caused the wreck told police she mistakenly ran the red light; she thought it had turned green.

McIntyre said she received a ticket for running a red light.
