The city council made appointments to its Historic Preservation Commission, Convention and Visitors Bureau and Keep Douglasville Beautiful boards at its meeting Monday night.
Named to the Historic Preservation Commission were Rhonda Muhammad, who will serve a one-year term through Jan. 31, 2011; Renee Kell and Josh Gibson, to a two-year-term through Jan.31, 2012; and Kip Berry and Pat Smith, to a three-year term through Jan. 31, 2013.
Appointed to the Convention and Visitors Bureau was Charlene Tilghman, an at-large member, who will serve a two-year-term through Dec. 31, 2012.
Christine Kirby was appointed to Post 5 of the Keep Douglasville Beautiful board, with a term ending Dec. 31, 2011.
Mayor Mickey Thompson presented his State of the City address, which had been previously recorded, at the beginning of the meeting. The approximately 20-minute speech drew applause from council members and people in the audience.
Other items approved by the council include:
• a resolution supporting the observance of Career, Technical and Agricultural Education Week Feb. 1-5.
• authorizing the sanitation director to submit the draft Short Term Work Program for its Solid Waste Management Plan to the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.
• an ordinance providing a policy on responses to requests for employment references and verifications.
• signing an amendment to an agreement with Motorola for adding a seventh channel to the digital upgrade of the public safety radio communications system at a cost not to exceed $35,810.87, with funding included in a previously approved grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
• and authorizing the mayor to sign an agreement with Lad Realty to provide appraisal services to the city for the Georgia Department of Transportation sidewalk project adjacent to Arbor Parkway and a section of Stewart Parkway, at a cost not to exceed $6,125.
