Public safety workers were recently armed and ready with an unusual set of accessories – toys and gadgets – as part of the Bremen Police Department’s annual “Shop with a Cop” Christmas program, benefitting local children from struggling families.

Police, firefighters and various emergency service employees escorted a group of beaming tots to the Walmart in Bremen on Tuesday morning. Approximately 70 children took up the chance to pick out $100 worth of items of their choice during the shopping spree, which has proved to be a success during its 20-year run in the community.

Though local businesses and citizens donate funding for the purchase of toys every year, Bremen Police Chief Keith Pesnell says the support he’s gotten this year is especially meaningful since many people contributed despite the tough economic times.

“It’s strictly donations from the community that allow us to do this,” he said. “This is a major part of the year for police that also affords us the chance to mingle with the kids and parents.”

Participants were also eager to see what the day would bring as they gathered in the old gymnasium at H.A. Jones Elementary School to hear greetings and holiday wishes from Bremen city officials before the shopping trip kicked off. Law enforcement leaders were also on hand to enforce safety tips to parents and children to help ensure a good day.

As participants between 8 and 13 years old boarded a school bus en route to Walmart, younger participants stopped by the neighborhood courthouse, where Santa Claus passed out toys that were hand-picked by Bremen Police.

With Christmas just a day away, Pesnell says he’s thankful for the variety of opportunities public safety personnel has to give to the public.

“We feel honored to assist them and make a difference in the lives of our citizens.”
